About Fish Tank Dimensions

Fish Tank Dimensions is a set of free tools for fishkeepers. It answers the practical questions that come up when you buy, set up or move an aquarium: how big a tank really is, how much water it holds, how heavy it gets, and how much gravel, heater and filter it needs.

Where the numbers come from

Volumes and weights are calculated from standard formulas. Tank dimensions are typical sizes for common US aquariums; manufacturers vary by a fraction of an inch, so check your own tank's label before buying a stand or lid. Heater and filter figures use widely used rules of thumb (3–5 watts per gallon, 4–6 turnovers per hour).
